ஸ்வாமிகளோடு நாம இருந்தா, ஒண்ணு பகவத் விஷயம், இல்லேன்னா மஹான்களோட சரித்தரம், இதைத் தான் கேட்க முடியும். அதிலும் மஹான்களோட சரித்திரங்களை அடிக்கடி சொல்லிண்டு இருப்பார். மாயவரம் பெரியவா பத்தி சொல்கிற மாதிரி, பருத்தியூர் கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்திரிகள் அப்படின்னு ஒரு மஹான் இருந்தார். அவரைப் பத்தியும் அடிக்கடி சொல்லுவார். அந்த கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்திரிகள் இளமையிலே வேத அத்யயனம் முடித்தப் பின்னர், குடும்பத்தில் கடன் இருந்ததாம். அதனாலே பணம் சம்பாதிக்க வேண்டும், அதற்கு ஏதாவது ஒரு வித்தை கற்றுக் கொள்ளலாம் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் இருந்தாராம்.
அந்தக் காலத்தில், சேங்காலிபுரம் முத்தண்ணாவாள் என்ற ஒரு மஹான் இருந்தார். பின்னாளில் அவர் ஸன்யாசம் வாங்கிக் கொண்டு சித்தி அடைந்தார். அவரைப் போய் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணி கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்த்ரிகள் உட்கார்ந்த போது, அன்றைக்கு ‘ரகு வம்சம்’ பாடம் நடந்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. அதிலே ரகு மஹாராஜா ‘விஸ்வஜித்’ என்ற ஒரு யாகம் செய்து, அதில் வந்த எல்லா திரவியத்தையும் தானம் செய்துவிட்டார் என்றும் அந்த நேரத்தில் ஒரு யாசகன் வந்த போது கொடுப்பதற்கு ஒன்றும் இல்லை அப்படீங்கற கட்டம் வந்ததாம். இதைக் கேட்ட கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்திரிகள், “நான் கிளம்பறேன். நான் உங்களிடம் ஏதாவது கத்துண்டு பணம் சம்பாதிக்கணும் என்கிற எண்ணத்தில் வந்தேன்… ஆனா இது மாதிரி ஒரு கட்டம் வருகிறதே?” என்றவுடன் முத்தண்ணாவாள், “ஆதியோட அந்தமா அந்த கதை சொல்லறேன். நீ.. கேளு!” என்று அந்தக் கதையை சொன்னாராம்.
கெளத்சன் என்ற ஒரு பிரம்மச்சாரி, வரதந்து என்ற அவரோட குருகிட்ட சதுர்தச வித்யைகளையும் கற்றுக் கொண்டப் பின், சமாவர்த்தனம் பண்ணிண்டு, கல்யாணம் செய்துகொள்ள உத்தரவு கேட்கிறார். “உங்களுக்கு ஏதாவது குரு தக்ஷிணை தரேனே” என்று சொன்னாராம். அதற்கு குரு சொன்னாராம், “நீ, ரொம்ப புத்திமானா இருந்தே. நன்னா என்கிட்டே கத்துண்டே. எனக்கு நல்லபடியா ஸுஶ்ருஷை பண்ணிணே. இதுக்கு மேல என்ன வேணும்? நான் திருப்தியா ஆகிட்டேன்.” அப்படீன்னவுடனே, “இல்லை… நீங்க ஏதாவது சொல்லுங்கோ. நான் உங்களுக்கு தரேன்..”னு என்று சிஷ்யர் நச்சரித்தாராம். குரு “அப்படியா… நீ எனக்கு 14 கோடி வராகன் கொண்டு வா!” அப்படீன்னுட்டாராம்.
உடனே இந்த பிரம்மச்சாரி ரகு மஹாராஜாக் கிட்டே வந்தார். அந்த நேரத்தில் தான் ரகு மஹாராஜா விஸ்வஜித் என்ற யாகத்தை பண்ணி முடித்து கையிலிருந்த கடைசிப் பவுன் வரைக்கும் எல்லாத்தையும் தானம் செய்துவிட்டார். பிரம்மச்சாரி வந்து விஷயத்தை சொன்னார், “நான் இது மாதிரி தானம் வாங்கும் எண்ணத்தோட வந்தேன். ஆனா, நீங்க எல்லாத்தையும் கொடுத்துட்டேள்னு தெரிஞ்சுண்டேன்…”
அதற்கு ரகு மஹாராஜா, “என்கிட்ட வந்து ஒருவர் யாசகம் கேட்டு வெறுங்கையோட போனார்’ என்று இருக்க வேண்டாம். நீ இன்னைக்கு ஒரு நாள் இங்கே இரு. நாளைக்குள்ளே உனக்கு நான் ஏற்பாடு பண்ணறேன்…” என்று சொல்லிட்டு அன்றைக்கு ராத்திரி குபேரன் மேலே படையெடுக்க திட்டம் போட்டாராம்.
இந்த ரகுவின் பெருமை எப்படி என்றால் – அவர் அப்பா திலீப மஹாராஜா அஸ்வமேத யாகம் பண்ணும் போது, இந்திரன் குதிரையை திருடிண்டு போய்விட்டான். அப்போது ரகு அவரை துரத்திக் கொண்டு ஆகாசத்தில் சென்றார். அப்போது, இந்திரன் தன்னுடைய வஜ்ராயுதத்தாலே ரகுவை அடித்தான். அதுகூட ரகுவை ஒன்றும் பண்ணவில்லை. அப்பேற்பட்ட பராக்கிரமம் கொண்ட மாவீரர். உடனே இந்திரன் சமாதானம் பேசிடறான். அந்த ரகுவை, ‘இவன் வந்து படையெடுத்தால் நாம் எங்கே போவது?”, என்று குபேரன் நினைத்துப் பார்த்தாராம். அன்று இரவே ரகு மஹாராஜாவின் கஜானாவில் 14 கோடி வராகனை (பவுனை) மழையா கொட்டிட்டாராம்.
இந்தக் கதையை ஸ்ரீ முத்தண்ணாவாள் கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்த்ரிகள் கிட்டே சொல்லி, “நீ எங்கிட்டே படி. நீ தனவானா மட்டும் இல்லாம, அந்த ரகு மஹாராஜா மாதிரி பெரிய வள்ளலாவும் இருப்பே! வதான்யவானாவும் இருப்பே!” என்று ஆசீர்வாதம் செய்தார்.
அதே மாதிரி அந்த கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்திரிகள் காவ்யங்கள், ராமாயணம் எல்லாம் கற்றுக்கொண்டு, ராமாயண ப்ரவசனமே பண்ணி, ரொம்ப பிரசித்தியா இருந்து, நிறைய சம்பாதித்து, நல்ல தான தர்மங்கள் நிறைய செய்துக் கொண்டு இருந்தார்.
அவருடைய வள்ளல்தன்மைக்கு ஸ்வாமிகள் ஒரு உதாரணம் சொல்வார் . ஒரு முறை ராமாயண நவாகம் முடித்து, சாயங்காலம் ப்ரவசன பூர்த்தியில் 50 பட்டுப் புடவைகள் வந்ததாம். இவர் அந்த 50 பட்டுப் புடவைகளையும் அங்கே இருந்தவாளுக்கு தானம் பண்ணிவிட்டாராம். சாஸ்த்ரிகளோட மாமியும் கூட இருந்திருக்கார். ஆத்துக்கு வந்தவுடனே மாமி, “எனக்கு ஒண்ணு வச்சிருந்திருக்கலாம்…”, அப்படீன்னாளாம். அப்போ அவர், “அதற்கென்ன! உனக்கு ராமர் கொடுப்பார்!” என்று சொன்னாராம்.
சொல்லி முடித்தவுடனே வாசல் கதவை யாரோ தட்டினாளாம். ஒரு செட்டியார், ஊரிலேயே பெரிய பணக்காரர், ஜவுளிக்கடை வைத்திருக்கிறவர், அவர் வந்து நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணி, “ஐயா! போன வருஷம் உங்கக்கிட வந்து ‘பேரன் பிறக்கவில்லை’ என்று குறைப்பட்டுக் கொண்டேன். நீங்கள் வந்து, ‘எனக்கு தெரிஞ்சது ராமாயணம் தான். என் ராமாயண ப்ரவசனம் வந்து கேளு” என்று சொன்னேள். நானும் என் குழந்தைகளோட வந்து அதைக் கேட்டேன். இன்னைக்கு நல்லபடியா எனக்குப் பேரன் பிறந்திருக்கான். அந்த சந்தோஷத்தில் என் ஜவுளிக்கடையிலிருந்து நல்லப் பட்டுப் புடவையா எடுத்து வந்திருக்கேன். நீங்க ஸ்வீகரிச்சுக்கணும்…” என்று கொடுத்துவிட்டுப் போனாராம். அப்படி அவர் ஒரு வார்த்தை சொன்னா அதை ராமர் சத்யமாக்கினார். அப்பேற்பட்ட மஹான்.
அதுக்கும் மேல, ஒரு ஊருக்கு போயிருந்த போது, ராமாயண நவாஹத்துக்கு கூப்பிட்டு இருந்தார்கள். போன இடத்திலே, “இங்கே மழை இல்லை. நீங்க விராட பர்வம் படிங்கோ” என்று சொன்னார்களாம். மஹாபாரதத்துல இருக்கிற விராட பர்வம் படிச்சா, மழை பெய்யும் ஒரு நம்பிக்கை… அதற்கு கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்திரிகள், “நான் ராமாயணம் படிக்கிறேன். ராமாயணம் படிச்சாலே மழை பெய்யும்!” அப்படீன்னாராம். அவா, “சரி. அப்புறம் உங்க சௌகர்யம்…” அப்படீன்னு சொன்னாளாம். அவர்களோட சந்தேகத்தைப் பார்த்த கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்த்ரிகள் சொன்னாராம் – “நான் ராமாயணம் படிச்சு மழை வரலேன்னா, அடுத்த நாளே ஸன்யாசம் வாங்கிக்கிறேன்!” அப்படீன்னாராம். அவர் இவ்வளவு தீவிரமாய் இருப்பதைப் பார்த்த எல்லோரும் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணி, “ராமாயணமே பாராயணம் பிரவசனம் பண்ணுங்கோ!” னு சொன்னாளாம்.
அவர் நவாஹம் பண்ணி அன்றைக்கு சாயங்காலம் வரை மழை வரவில்லை. கிருஷ்ண சாஸ்திரிகள், “காவிக்கு ஏற்பாடு பண்ணுகோ!” என்று கூறிவிட்டார். அந்த ஊர்க்காரர்கள் எல்லாம் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணி, “இல்லையில்லை… மழைக்கு மேலே ராமாயண ப்ரவசனமே ஆனந்த மழையாக இருந்தது. உங்கள் பெருமை தெரியாம பேசிவிட்டோம். அதனாலே அந்த மாதிரியெல்லாம் நீங்க பண்ண வேண்டாம்…” என்று பிராத்தித்தார்கள். ஆனால் அவர், “இன்னும் நேரம் இருக்கே..” என்றாராம். அன்று ராத்திரி மழை கொட்டுக் கொட்டு என கொட்டித் தள்ளியதாம். அப்படியெல்லாம் ராமர் அவருக்கு அனுக்ரஹம் பண்ணியிருக்கார். அப்பேற்பட்ட மஹான். இந்த மாதிரி மஹான்கள் சரித்ரமெல்லாம் ஸ்வாமிகள் திரும்பத் திரும்ப ரொம்ப சந்தோஷமாச் சொல்லுவார்.
கோபிகா ஜீவன ஸ்மரணம்… கோவிந்தா! கோவிந்தா!
When we are with Swamigal, we can hear only two things: matters related to the Divine (Bhagavat Vishayam) or the life histories of Great Saints (Mahans). Among them, he would frequently narrate the life stories of Mahans. Just as he speaks about Mayavaram Periyava, he often mentions a great soul named Paruthiyur Krishna Sastri.
In his youth, after completing his Vedic studies, Krishna Sastri’s family was in debt. He felt the need to earn money and intended to learn a specific art or skill for that purpose. During those times, there lived a Mahatma named Sengalipuram Muthannaval (who later took Sanyasa and attained Siddhi).
When Krishna Sastri went to prostrate before him and sat down, Muthannaval was teaching the ‘Raghuvamsa’. The portion being taught described King Raghu performing the ‘Viswajit’ sacrifice, where he donated every single possession he owned. At that moment, a seeker arrived, but the King had nothing left to give.
Hearing this, Krishna Sastri got up and said, “I am leaving. I came here to learn something from you so I could earn money… but if the story itself describes a stage where one is left with nothing, what is the point?”
Muthannaval replied, “I will tell you the story from the beginning to the end. You must listen!” He then narrated the full story:
A young bachelor named Kautsa, after learning the fourteen branches of knowledge from his Guru Varadantu, completed his graduation (Samavarthanam) and sought permission to marry. He insisted on giving his teacher a Guru Dakshina.
The Guru initially said, “You were very intelligent, you learned well, and you served me sincerely. I am satisfied; I need nothing more.” But the disciple persisted. Finally, the Guru said, “Fine… then bring me 14 crore gold coins (Varagans)!”
The boy went to King Raghu. By then, Raghu had completed the Viswajit sacrifice and had given away everything down to the last gold coin. The boy saw this and said, “I came with the intention of asking for a donation, but I see you have already given everything away.”
Raghu Maharaja replied, “Let it not be said that someone came to me for help and left empty-handed. Stay here today. I will arrange it by tomorrow.”
That night, King Raghu planned to wage war against Kubera (the God of Wealth). Such was Raghu’s prowess—even when Indra once stole his father Dilipa’s sacrificial horse, Raghu had pursued him into the heavens. Even Indra’s thunderbolt (Vajrayudha) could not harm him. Fearing Raghu’s invasion, Kubera showered 14 crore gold coins into Raghu’s treasury that very night.
After telling this story, Muthannaval blessed Krishna Sastri, saying: “Study under me. You will not only be wealthy, but you will also be a great philanthropist like King Raghu! You will be a Vadanyavana (a person of extreme generosity).”
True to those words, Krishna Sastri mastered the Kavyas and the Ramayana. He became a famous Ramayana exponent (Pravachana Karta), earned a great deal, and spent it all on noble charities.
Swamigal often shares an example of his charitable nature. Once, at the conclusion of a nine-day Ramayana discourse (Navaham), 50 expensive silk sarees were offered to him as gifts. He immediately distributed all 50 sarees to the people gathered there.
His wife (Mami), who was present, later said at home, “You could have kept at least one for me.” He simply replied, “What of that? Rama will give it to you!”
Immediately after he said this, there was a knock at the door. A wealthy merchant, the biggest textile owner in town, came in, prostrated, and said, “Sir, last year I came to you grieving that I had no grandson. You told me, ‘I only know the Ramayana; come and listen to my discourse.’ I listened with my family. Today, a grandson has been born to me. In that joy, I have brought the best silk saree from my shop. Please accept it.”
When he spoke a word, Lord Rama made it the truth. Such was his greatness.
On another occasion, he was invited for a Ramayana Navaham. The locals said, “There is no rain here. Please recite the Virata Parva (from the Mahabharata).” It is a traditional belief that reciting Virata Parva brings rain.
Krishna Sastri replied, “I will recite the Ramayana. Reciting the Ramayana itself will bring rain!” The locals were skeptical. Seeing their doubt, he declared, “If it does not rain after I recite the Ramayana, I will take Sanyasa (renunciation) the very next day!”
The villagers were stunned by his conviction and asked him to proceed with the Ramayana. By the evening of the final day, it had not rained. Krishna Sastri told them, “Arrange for the saffron robes (for Sanyasa).”
The villagers begged him, “No, please! More than the rain, the Ramayana discourse itself was like a downpour of bliss. We spoke without knowing your greatness. Please do not take Sanyasa.”
He replied, “There is still time left in the day.” That night, the skies opened up, and it poured incessantly. Lord Rama showered his grace upon him in that manner.
Swamigal would narrate the histories of such Mahans repeatedly with great joy.

50புடவைகள் வெகுமானமாக வந்து ஸதசில் தானமாக அளித்தபோது மனைவியிடத்தில் ராமர உணக்குத் தருவார் என்ற வாக்கை நிரூபிக்க யாரோ ஒர் பக்தர் மூலம் புடவையை அருளிய இராமரின் அளப்பிலா கருணையை என்னென்பது ?
