ஸ்வாமிகள் SSLC முடித்தவுடனே, ரயில்வேயில ஆள் எடுப்பதாக கேள்விப்பட்டு ஒரு interview-க்கு போனாராம். அவரோட சிநேஹிதர் அதே ஊரில் கூடப் படித்தவர், அவரோட பேர் ஸ்வாமிகள் சொன்னார். எனக்கு இப்போத மறந்துவிட்டது, அந்த சிநேஹிதரும் அந்த interview-க்கு வந்திருக்கார்.

இரண்டு பேரும் interview attend பண்ணியிருக்கா. அந்த interview-ல் “நீ ஸம்ஸ்க்ருத ஸ்டூடென்ட்-னு சொல்லறியே… ரகு வம்சத்திலிருந்து ஏதாவது ஸ்லோகம் சொல்லு”-னு ஒரு ரயில்வே அதிகாரி கேட்டிருக்கார். ஸ்வாமிகள் நிறைய ஸ்லோகம் சொல்லியிருக்கார். Interview எடுத்த ரயில்வே அதிகாரியும் ரொம்ப சந்தோஷப் பட்டிருக்கார்.

வெளியே வந்தப் பின்னே ‘நீ எண்ணப் பண்ணே? நான் எண்ணப் பண்ணேன்?’ அப்படீன்னு நண்பர்கள் பேசும் போது, “உனக்கு தாண்டா கல்யாணம் வேலைக் கிடைக்கும்”, என்று அந்த சிநேஹிதர் சொன்னாராம். “நீதான் interview ரொம்ப நன்னா பண்ணியிருக்கே. எனக்கும் வேலை கிடைக்க ஏதாவது வழி சொல்லேன். நீதான் நிறைய ஸ்லோகம் எல்லாம் படிக்கிறியே..”, என்று சொன்னவுடனே, “சுந்தர காண்டம் பாராயணம் பண்ணு.” அப்படீன்னு சொன்னாராம் ஸ்வாமிகள்.

“எங்காத்துல அந்த புத்தகம் இருக்கு. நான் பாராயணம் பண்ணறேன்”, அப்படீன்னு அந்த சிநேஹிதர் சொல்லி அவர் பாராயணம் செய்தார். அப்படி பாராயணம் பண்ணி அவருக்கு அந்த வேலை கிடைச்சுதாம். ஆனால் ஸ்வாமிகளுக்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை. அப்போ, “கல்யாணம்! உனக்கல்லவா கிடைத்திருக்கணும்?” என்று கேட்டவுடனே, “பகவான் அனுக்ரஹம் எப்படி வேணும்னா இருக்கும். பல ரூபமா இருக்கும். அவர் எப்படி பண்ணறாரோ, அப்படி!” என்று அந்த வயதிலேயே ஏற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

ஸ்ரீ சிவன் சார், “வாழ்வும், தாழ்வும், சாவும் அவனருள் என்பான் தெய்வ சாது” என்று எழுதி இருக்கிறார். அதை அன்னிக்கே ஸ்வாமிகள் ரொம்பத் தெளிவா மனதில் வைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஸ்வாமிகளோட வாழ்க்கையே அப்படி இருந்திருக்கு. பிறந்தவுடனே மாந்தம்-னு அப்பப்போ febrile fits வரும். ரொம்ப ருசியான பண்டங்கள் பழங்கள் எல்லாம் சாப்பிடக் கூடாது. அம்மாவும் இல்லை. ஏதாவது ஒரு பெருமை வருவதற்குள் கஷ்டமும் வந்துவிடும்.

அவர் அப்பா ஒரு இடத்துலே பாகவதம் படிக்கும் போது மூணு நாள்ல ஒரு விருத்தி வந்து விட்டது. அதனாலே, ஸ்வாமிகள் 12 வயதில் மீதி நாலு நாள்ல மீதி பாகவதம் படிச்சு முடிச்சிருக்கார். பாகவதத்தோட ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதம் ரொம்ப கடினமான ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதம். அதைப் பிரிக்கறதே கஷ்டம். இவர் அதைப் படிச்சு பூர்த்திப் பண்ணியிருக்கார். அங்கே இருக்கறவா எல்லாம் ஸ்வாமிகளை “ஆஹா! ஹா!”-னு கொண்டாடுறா. ஆத்துக்கு வந்தா ஜுரம்.

அப்படி ஸ்வாமிகளுக்கு ‘ஒரே நாள்ல கார்த்தால சந்தோஷம், சாயங்காலம் கஷ்டம்’-ங்ற மாதிரி, மாறி மாறி வந்ததுனால, அவர் அப்பவே, “வாழ்வும், தாழ்வும் சாவும் அவனருள்” அப்படீங்கற தீர்மானத்தில் இருந்தார். ஸ்வாமிகள் அடிக்கடி “நன்றே வருகினும், தீதே விளைகினும், நானறிவது ஒன்றேயுமில்லை. உனக்கே பரம்! எனக்குள்ள எல்லாம் அன்றே உனதென்று அளித்து விட்டேன். அழியாத குணக்குன்றே! அருட்கடலே! இமவான் பெற்ற கோமளமே!” என்ற அபிராமி அந்தாதி பாடலைக் குறிப்பிடுவார். கிருஷ்ணர் மேல ஒரு மனசிருக்கும்போது, “தேவகிப் பெற்ற கோமளமே!”, அப்படீன்னு சொல்லுவார். SV சுப்ரமணியம் -னு சாதுராம் ஸ்வாமிகளோட அண்ணா இருக்கார். அவர்கிட்டே “இப்படி மாத்தி சொல்லலாமா? இது தளைத் தட்டுமா?” என்றெல்லாம் கேட்டுக் கொண்டு, “தேவகிப் பெற்ற கோமளமே!” என்று சொல்லுவார். அப்படி பகவான் கிட்ட தன்னை ஒப்புக் கொடுத்திருந்தார் அவர்.

पातय वा पाताले स्थापय वा सकलभुवनसाम्राज्ये ।

मातस्तव पदयुगलं नाहं मुञ्चामि नैव मुञ्चामि ॥

பாதய வா பாதாளே ஸ்தாபய வா சகல புவன சாம்ராஜ்யே |

மாத: தவ பத யுகளம் நாஹம் முஞ்சாமி நைவ முஞ்சாமி ||

“அம்மா! நீ என்னை மூவுலகிற்கும் தலைவனாக வைத்தாலும் சரி, பாதாளத்தில் தள்ளினாலும் சரி, உன் பாதங்களை கைவிட மாட்டேன். கைவிடவே மாட்டேன்” என்பதே அவர் கொள்கை.

அப்படி இருந்ததால அந்த நண்பர் “என்ன உனக்கு வேலைக் கிடைக்கவில்லையே” என்றவுடன், “அதுவும் நல்லதுக்குத்தான். ஏதாவது பகவானோட ஏற்பாடா இருக்கும்” என்று கூறிவிட்டார். அதன் பிறகு இவருக்கு போஸ்ட்-ஆபீஸ்-ல் வேலைக் கிடைத்தது. அவர் ரயில்வே-ஆபிசில் இருந்தார்.

போஸ்ட்-ஆபீஸ்-ல் கார்த்தால கவுன்ட்டர்-ல் இருக்கும் போது கொஞ்சம் வேலை. அதன் பிறகு, மத்யானம் நாலு லெட்டெர்-ல ஸ்டாம்ப் அடிச்ச பிறகு வேலை குறைச்சல் தான். அந்த free-time எல்லாம் ஒரு நல்ல சீனியர்-ரும் அமைந்ததாலே, ஸ்வாமிகள் போஸ்ட்-ஆபீஸ்-லேயே கையில் புத்தகம் வெச்சுண்டு நாராயணீயம் படிப்பார். அதே மாதிரி, ‘மாயவரம் பெரியவா ப்ரவசனம் கேட்கணும்’ என்று அனுமதி கேட்டு போவதற்கு இந்த போஸ்ட்-ஆபீஸ் வேலை ரொம்ப உதவியா இருந்திருக்கு. அப்படி அந்தப் பழக்கத்துல வந்து, மஹாபெரியவா அனுக்ரஹத்தினாலே 36 வயதிலே வேலையை விட்டுவிட்டு, பாகவதம் ராமாயணம் படிச்சுண்டு உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார்.

அந்த ரயில்வே-சர்விஸில் சேர்த்த சிநேஹிதர் ஒரு நாள் ஸ்வாமிகளை வந்து பார்த்தார். அன்னைக்கு நான் அங்கே இருந்தேன். வந்து அவர் ஸ்வாமிகளை நமஸ்காரம் செய்தார். அவர், “என்னை ஞாபகம் இருக்கா?” அப்படீன்னு சொல்லி நடந்ததெல்லாம் சொன்னார்.

ஸ்வாமிகள், “நன்னா ஞாபகம் இருக்கு. உன் சுந்தர காண்ட புத்தகத்தில் abridged version என்று போட்டிருக்கும். சில குறிப்பிட்ட ஸ்லோகங்கள் தான் இருக்கும். அதுவே உனக்கு அவ்வளவு அனுக்ரஹம் பண்ணியிருக்கு… இதிலே பூர்ணமா சுந்தர காண்டம் இருக்கு. இதை பாராயணம் பண்ணு.”, அப்படீன்னு புஸ்தகம் குடுத்து, ரொம்ப சந்தோஷமா பேசி அவரை அனுப்பிச்சார்.

அப்புறம், என்கிட்டே இந்தக் கதையை சொல்லி, “விசித்திர ரூப: கலு தவ அனுக்ரஹ:” அப்படீன்னு நாராயணீயத்திலே வரும். அது மாதிரி, பகவானுடைய அனுக்ரஹம் பல ரூபத்திலே இருக்கும். நானும் ரயில்வேல சேர்ந்திருந்தா இவன் ஆபீசரா இருப்பான். நான் கிளெர்க்-கா இருந்திருப்பேன். நான் இவனைப் போய் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணியிருப்பேன். இன்னிக்கு அவன் வந்து என்னை நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணறான். பகவானோட அனுக்ரஹம் பல ரூபமா இருக்கும். நமக்கு புரியாது. பொறுமை வேணும்…” அப்படீன்னு வேடிக்கையா சொன்னார்.

The Divine Play of Grace

After finishing his SSLC, Swamigal heard about a recruitment drive in the Railways and went for an interview. A childhood friend from the same town, who studied with him, also attended the interview. Swamigal used to mention his name, but I have forgotten it now.

Both attended the interview. During the session, a Railway official asked him, “You say you are a student of Sanskrit… recite some shlokas from the *Raghuvamsam*.” Swamigal recited many shlokas beautifully. The official who conducted the interview was extremely pleased.

When they came out, the friends discussed how they performed. The other friend told Swamigal, “Kalyanam, only you will get the job! You did the interview so well. Please tell me a way so that I get the job too. You read so many shlokas, after all.” Swamigal immediately advised him, “Perform *parayanam* of the **Sundara Kandam**.”

The friend replied, “I have that book at home. I will do the parayanam,” and he did so. Following the parayanam, the friend secured the job, but Swamigal did not. When the friend asked, “Kalyanam! Shouldn’t you have been the one to get it?”, Swamigal accepted it even at that young age, saying, “Bhagavan’s grace can take any form. It manifests in many ways. It is as He wills!”

### Acceptance of the Divine Will

Sri Sivan Sar has written, **“வாழ்வும், தாழ்வும், சாவும் அவனருள் என்பான் தெய்வ சாது”** (*“Rise, fall, and even death are His grace—so says the Divine Sage”*). Swamigal held this truth very clearly in his mind even back then. His whole life was like that. Right from birth, he suffered from *maantham* (digestive issues) and frequent febrile fits. He couldn’t eat delicious foods or fruits. He also lost his mother early. Before any honor could come his way, a hardship would precede it.

Once, when his father was reciting the *Bhagavatam* at a certain place, he fell ill on the third day. Consequently, the 12-year-old Swamigal completed the remaining four days of the moola parayanam. The Sanskrit in the *Bhagavatam* is very dense and difficult even to split the words. Yet, he completed it. Everyone there praised him, saying “AhaHa!”, but when he returned home, he was gripped by fever.

Because Swamigal experienced this pattern of “joy in the morning, hardship in the evening” throughout his life, he remained firm in the resolve that “Life, low-tide, and death are His grace.” Swamigal would often quote the *Abhirami Anthadi* verse:

> **“நன்றே வருகினும், தீதே விளைகினும், நானறிவது ஒன்றேயுமில்லை. உனக்கே பரம்! எனக்குள்ள எல்லாம் அன்றே உனதென்று அளித்து விட்டேன். அழியாத குணக்குன்றே! அருட்கடலே! இமவான் பெற்ற கோமளமே!”**
> *(Whether good comes or evil results, I know nothing. It is all Your burden! Everything I called mine, I offered to You long ago. O Hill of Undying Virtue! Ocean of Grace! O Tender One born to Himavan!)*

When his mind was focused on Krishna, he would change the line to **“தேவகிப் பெற்ற கோமளமே!”** (*“O Tender One born to Devaki!”*). He even checked with Sadhu Ram Swamigal’s elder brother, SV Subramaniam, asking, “Can I change it like this? Will it break the poetic meter?” Such was his surrender to Bhagavan.

His core philosophy was encapsulated in this Sanskrit shloka:

> **पातय वा पाताले स्थापय वा सकलभुवनसाम्राज्यே ।**
> **मातस्तव पदयुगलं नाहं मुञ्चामि नैவ मुञ्चामि ॥**
> *(O Mother! Whether You cast me into the netherworld or establish me as the emperor of all the worlds, I shall not leave Your twin feet; I shall never leave them.)*

### The Hidden Blessing

When the friend lamented that Swamigal didn’t get the job, Swamigal simply said, “That too is for the best. It must be bhagavan’s arrangement.” Later, Swamigal got a job in the Post Office.

In the Post Office, there was work at the counter in the morning, but after stamping few letters in the afternoon, the workload was light. Because he had a kind senior colleague, Swamigal used his free time to sit in the Post Office and read the *Narayaneeyam*. Furthermore, this job was very helpful when he sought permission to go and listen to the discourses of Mayavaram Periyava. Eventually, through that habit and the grace of Mahaperiyava, he left his job at the age of 36 and spent his life immersed in *Bhagavatam* and *Ramayanam*.

Years later, the friend who had joined the Railway service came to visit Swamigal. I was there that day. He prostrated before Swamigal and asked, “Do you remember me?” and recounted everything that happened.

Swamigal replied, “I remember it well. Your Sundara Kandam book was an ‘abridged version’ with only specific shlokas. Even that graced you so much… but this book here has the complete Sundara Kandam. Do parayanam with this.” He gave him the book and sent him off happily.

Afterward, Swamigal turned to me and shared this story, quoting the *Narayaneeyam*: **“விசித்திர ரூப: கலு தவ அனுக்ரஹ:”** (*”Strange and varied indeed are the forms of Your grace”*).

He jokingly remarked, “Guruvayoorappan’s grace appears in many forms. We don’t understand it; we need patience. If I had joined the Railways, he would be an officer and I would be a clerk. I would have had to go and salute (namaskaram) him. Today, he comes and prostrates before me. God’s grace is multifaceted.”

**Gopika Jeevana Smaranam… Govinda! Govinda!**
